For years, I have studied and written about the various manifestations of what one can call “transgenderism.” The discussion was based on the premise that some fundamental aspects of the subject are obvious and can be taken for granted. The evolution of events, particularly the debates in the Texas Legislature in 2023 showed that a restatement and clarification of basic facts are necessary.
The debates on the subject have been held, at the moral and legal level, discussing the rights of individuals and groups of people. Here, it is discussed at the level of science.
Science formulates models to represent the natural facts and relationships which are prior to science and to mental representations. Thus, science generates, or consists of, a collection of models of reality, expressed in logical, coherent sentences. (The basis of science is grammar.) The words used for a definition must be descriptive, precise, and unambiguous; the structure of the sentence must make it logical and univocal.
Science is hard, cold uncaring, and amoral, but objective. Objectively, there are no trans women and trans men, but only emasculated males and hirsutized females.
I know that presenting positions not conforming with the current party line opens me to the charge of being transphobic. It is an established modus operandi today, when bereft of arguments, to brand the opponent an
ist or phobe of some kind, and terminate the discussion. I can say that I also strongly oppose the welfare state, but that does not make me welfarephobic. My opposition is rational and based on facts. At the same time, I have all compassion for the clients, actually victims, of the system, and am ready to work to help them free themselves from the state of dependency that is degrading for their dignity. The same applies for the “gender” ideology and practice, and its victims.
This argument starts from the definition of humans as living organisms.
Selecting the essential among the features that were advanced to characterize a living organism, one can define it as an assembly of molecules possessing metabolisms. Next, a normal living organism possesses the ability to reproduce, or, better said, to participate in the reproduction of the species. This is why the donkey and the horse are normal living organisms, whereas the mule is a freak.
Many species, including humans, have sexual reproduction, in which the offspring results from combination of cells from two parents, one male, the other female. In the development of languages, specific names were introduced for them, In English, they were man for male and woman for female, alike to the description of other species, e.g., stallion and mare, bull and cow, rooster and hen, etc.
The current problems arose when some men started to call themselves women and some women started to call themselves men, and undertook to impose this model upon the society at large. The process was gradual. With insistence, propaganda, brainwashing, and repression, the terms of trans-man and trans-woman have been “naturalized.” Then, in individual cases, the prefix has been dropped, and we read nonsense like “a man can give birth.”
Sex can be defined:
(1) morphologically (looking at sex organs)
(2) functionally (woman produces ova, man produces sperm).
(3) genetically (man has Y chromosomes, woman does not have Y chromosomes.)
Criterion (1) can be misleading. In very rare cases, there are persons who, by it, have been assigned the wrong sex. There are various reasons for such occurrences. Examples can be found in published reports.
Criterion (2)also fails, very occasionally. Thus, Klinefelter syndrome sufferers, unquestionably male, produce little or no sperm; Turner syndrome sufferers, unquestionably female, usually produce no ova. Such occurrences have been deviously exploited to push for a “fuzzy” concept of sexuality, the claim of fluidity of sex and of existence of “nonbinary” humans, under the rather imprecise definition of intersex.
The genetic definition, Criterion (3), removes all uncertainty:
. ” In humans it (is) the presence or the absence of the Y chromosome that’s sex determining” Thus, Klinefelter cases are unquestionably males; Turner cases are unquestionably females. Likewise for persons with ambiguous or misleading morphology, one decides based on Y or no Y.
The relationship between Criterion (3) and the other two criteria is that between cause and effect,
What is peculiar about transgenderism, is that an already classified condition is, incorrectly, cut off from the entire class of conditions of the same type and discussed as if it were unique.
To illustrate: if young Joe one day proclaims that he is the king of Siam, will his claim be taken seriously and respected? Yet Joe can vouch that he has “experienced a profound inherent incongruence between his assigned (condition) at birth and his true identity,” that “this is not a lifestyle choice, but a realization of (his) authentic self.” Joe will ask that a proper appellation be used for him, like Your Majesty, or Your Highness, which “affirms (his) identity and shows basic respect.” “This small gesture can have a significant impact on (his)r mental health and sense of acceptance.”[6] In addition, Joe will produce a physician’s certificate, stating that denial of his claim puts him at high risk of committing suicide. Will the society accept Joe for “whom he is,” that is, a king? Will a law be passed, obliging men to bow and women to curtsy before him? Will the teacher who refuses to address him by his preferred appellation be fired? If the answer is no, why should Joey’s delusion of status be treated differently from Dr. Levine’s delusion of sex?
Note, furthermore, that there is a possibility, however remote, that Joey becomes in fact, King, if the King of Thailand adopts him, the parliament grants him citizenship, and the king abdicates in his favor. There is no possibility, however, that Dr. Levine can excise the Y chromosomes from the cells of his body, no matter how much he cuts off, or grafts onto, it. Yet Dr. Levine, was declared a USA Today woman of the year in 2022. An official biography does not even give Dr. Levine’s first name before declaring he is a she.
Should archeologists, many centuries from now, sift the information recovered about our time, they would conclude that our civilization had gone mad, and suicidal, to boot.
This state of affairs has been brought about by a multifarious corruption.
Corruption of language
Languages that I am familiar with, have suffered a degradation in modern times, affecting their clarity and precision. The English language has seen loss of the second person singular in the pronoun, loss of flexion, migration of nouns to function as verbs. As a consequence, the order of words in a sentence is essential, so one needs to think a sentence before uttering it, which alas, often does not happen. In speech, the problem can be mitigated by intonation and gesticulation, but in writing, one finds many sentences meaning, in fact, something else than intended. This reduction in the quality of communication has come through laziness and sloppiness.
More recently, the debasement of language has been produced by ideology. Some word was declared offensive, then it was removed and replaced by a word which meant something else, thus reducing the precision of communication. One example that I followed closely was the word chairman. Originally, it did not have a connotation of sex. Thus, Lucy of I Love Lucy TV comedy was in an episode chairman of the bazaar (a) also, in a book of the Rumpole series, the chairman of a lawyers’ group or society was a female barrister.[10](b) Some persons with a persecution complex claimed that chairman is a symbol of male supremacy (!?) and after propaganda and intimidation obtained that the word chair is used instead, In this way a homonymic noun was created, in addition to the homonymic verb already in use, to the detriment of the language,
At about the same time, the singular third people’s pronoun for human subjects was gradually eliminated to assuage the same persecution complex. I encountered it first, more than 35 years ago, in an advertisement for a student loan program: “With a Perking loan a student can receive up to $4500 a year if they’ve completed fewer than two years of a program.” Today, such nonsensical sentences are heard and read everywhere; he and she are gone. It is assumed that everybody should know what the intended meaning is, which is disastrously wrong. The sentence should be such that a reader with no inkling of author’s unwritten conventions correctly understands it upon reading.
A solution would be to rewrite (contort) the sentence, for instance: “After being in college for less than two years, a student can borrow up to $4,500.” A more straightforward formulation is to use one of the singular pronouns as the generic form. To explain this, it is better to take an example from languages that have genders for the third person plural. Thus, in French, if we say: Two persons are coming; they arrive, we can have:
– Mr Vert et Mr Rouge viennent; ils arrivent. (masculine ils)
– Mm e Vert et Mme Rouge viennent; elles arrivent. (feminine elles)
– Mr et Mme Vert viennent; ils arrivent. (masculine ils)
grammatically, the masculine has priority over the feminine. This rule was taught to me by my mother and two aunts, all involved in teaching, at various levels (prim The form of the third sentence is required by the principle that ary to college); later it was reinforced by another woman, my high school teacher. All would have considered insane the idea that correct grammar could demean their dignity and social status.
The optimal form of the sentence we started with, is: “A student can borrow up to $4,500 if he has been in college for less than two years.”
More and more often, a word defining a status or condition of a person is deemed or just decreed offensive by someone with complexes, and another word is forced in instead, the status or condition expressed by the word thus reassigned, losing its definition and description. The language becomes poorer. The (forcible) re appropriation of words is a means of controlling people, subverting their freedom. This truth was understood by thinkers as diverse as Lewis Carroll and George Orwell. People are fully controlled when they say and do without protesting things that make no sense.
There are many examples of language corruption for political purposes. Here we concentrate on the “transgender” phenomenon. A sustained effort was made to create terms and phrases to help the spread of the practices involved. The first step, replacement of sex with gender in conversation and definitions, was discussed earlier. [1](b) Next, the description of the process was worked on.
Objectively, the organism modifications seek the destruction of two of the manifestations of sex: :morphological and functional. Therefore, the correct definition is sex obliteration. The “treatment” conducted to its end also involves sexual mutilation (mastectomy, castration, spaying). Such an honest description was, of course not used. At first, the term sex change operation, to treat the Gender Identity Disorder was used. [1[(a) Later, the condition was no longer described as a disorder and the process was called gender reassignment. Lately, gender affirming treatment was settled upon. What these all have in common is that they are nonsense, but the search for a term did not seek scientific truth, but some positive connotation to help sell the procedure. (Isn’t it nice to affirm oneself?) Relentless propaganda even lent glamor to this sad condition. An education system that has quit teaching its subjects to think has helped. If the purveyors were obliged by their license to use the scientifically correct term for their services (sex obliteration) the transgender fad in schools would vanish.
The glamorization also plays a role in the participation of males, described as “trans women, “in the female divisions of sport competitions. This participation was criticized for its unfairness to the female competitors, which is right but incomplete, because the harm done to boys has not been sufficiently examined.
Insecure, unmoored, psychologically unstable boys are given a perverse incentive to “become” girls for fame or riches. This results in the irreversible destruction of their bodies, for which no amount of money or fame can compensate. In fact, the damage done to boys is arguably greater than that done to girls they compete against. (It is worse to become a freak for life than lose a sports competition.) Removing glamorization of the procedure by enforcing the use of the proper scientific terms will greatly reduce the problem. (Of course, boys who undertake no self-mutilation and simply want to humiliate and bully girls have a different problem.)
On the other hand, treatments to cure the underlying condition (sex or gender dysphoria) have been described as conversion therapy, nonsense again. One cannot be converted to a state in which one has existed since conception. The faulty name suggests that the treatment is somehow unnatural, whence the condition is somewhat normal, which would be laughable if it were not dangerous. It is also suggested that “conversion” is either impossible or so dangerous by its side-effects that it should better not be attempted. The first position is anti scientific, the second disingenuous. It has not been invoked to reject treatments of other forms of dysphoria, most accompanied by most dangerous side-effects.
The false, misleading terminology, glamorizes the brutal mutilation of humans and casts a negative light on those who even try to limit it. As long as the purveyors of sexual mutilation set and control the language, any opposition to it will be conducted from a defensive, weak position
The State should not issue licenses for gender reassignment, gender affirming treatment, etc., but deem them deceptive advertising. Thus, license applications should be accepted for sex obliteration, with procedures refereed to as castration and spaying.
The State should license and subsidize research for sex preservation and sex restoration treatments. The term conversion therapy should be unacceptable in any legal documents.
Corruption of science
History knows cases of erroneous reports that drew widespread attention within the scientific community and outside it. Many were ready to accept them at face value, some, fewer, examined them critically and ultimately proved them wrong. For example, in the 1990-s there was the report on cold fusion, expected to provide mankind with limitless energy. Earlier, around 1970, there was the report on polywater, which was feared to convert rivers and seas into gels; better experiments deflated each of them.
Earlier, there was the theory of Trofim Lysenko, the most relevant for the discussion here. That absurd representation was meant to align science with the tenets of Marxism-Leninism. It received the seal of approval from Stalin and became a dogma of Soviet biology. Denying it, or even attempting to run experiments that could contradict it, led to loss of a job, imprisonment, even execution. Its application in agriculture killed millions in the USSR, by starvation. Later, its application in China led to famines that killed tens of millions.
An important consideration is that scientific work has become very costly. To advance, even survive, in the profession, the scientist must secure funding from some source. Research grants are also a source of income for universities. The matters have gone so far that departments look more, when hiring, to the chance that a candidate would secure grants than to the chance that he would produce significant, far reaching research. Then quest for money often makes researchers to jump onto some field or general subject that seems to be in fashion. Over time, the participation of private agencies and foundations has decreased dramatically, so the government has become the source of funds. Political influence on the researcher and research is thus unavoidable; where there is political corruption, corruption of science follows. Indeed, cases of flagrant nonsense lavishly funded by federal agencies because it fitted a political program are known. Adding in the recognized tendency of less established scientists to support the dominant theory of the day, we see how an absurd model like transgenderism can find appreciable following. Clear signals were given that the power of government supports the model. Thus, the model has been pushed by propaganda in education. Then, borrowing the Soviet approach, those who disagreed were persecuted.
Under the circumstances, t here is no surprise that rather few find the courage to state the obvious, that “the science behind the gender ideology is bunk.” Predictably, this truism is most often stated by scientists of such a high reputation that they are impervious to attacks.
Corruption of medicine
The subject could be placed under the corruption of sciences, but is treated separately because medicine is both science and trade.
There is a strong financial incentive to perform sexual mutilations: In 2015, such an operation cost from $40,000 to more than $75,000. The surgery, however, is not the largest expenditure. After it, the patient is for life dependent on hormones and other medications. (One encounters the same pattern with computer printers. The device is sold at low price, but the buyer has to purchase ink from the same manufacturer, a recurrent expenditure, at a price set high enough.) It was reported that on just one such drugs, Lupton, the manufacturer, Abbvie, made $726 million in the year 2018. In a specific case, in 2003, the cost of the full “treatment” ordered by a New York judge for an inmate who had requested it was $500,000 (paid by the taxpayers).[1](a)
With so much money involved, many members of the medical profession, individually or collectively, have become practitioners and propagandists of sex obliteration. Some medical professional organizations have joined in. The excuse that some physicians have been intimidated and do not dare to express a dissenting opinion cannot be accepted. The persecution here is not like in the former Soviet Union. Indeed, there have been physicians and physicians’ organizations that expound the biological truth on sex in humans.
Unfortunately, the voices of reason are drowned by the noise of propaganda, amplified by the press and aided ad abetted by politicians. (Corruption has been a constant feature in politics, so a separate section for it is not needed ) The consequence is that treatments for sex preservation and sex restoration are not conducted. The implied rationalization (originating in interest groups) is that that form of dysphoria is a normal state, therefore, the treatment of it needs not be attempted. As an example (of many) of the absurdity of arguments offered for that representation is that there have been persons with that condition throughout history. This is like saying: cancer has been known throughout history, therefore cancer is a normal, wholesome, state of an organism.
The denial of scientific truth and truth of nature has grave consequences, as shown in the following example. Some twenty years ago, a girl attending a Catholic school in a Southeast Texas diocese decided that she should be a boy. As she (identified as “they”) explained at statehouse hearings in 2023, the school was most accommodating, and allowed her to come to school in some”unisex overalls,” so she couldn grow up into a “man.” For that, the responsible officials – school principal, director of diocesan education office, bishop – should have been driven out of their offices with a whip. Instead, she graduated in that sorry state and went on to acquire two advanced degrees. At the time of the hearing she was accredited as a counselor for children with a sex dysphoria. The accreditation was a criminal act of the State of Texas. Imagine an unrecovered alcoholic being hired to counsel children who might be inclined o drinking. Everybody would explode in indignation. The situation is possible because the sex dysphoria, a pathological condition of the mind, is not properly recognized as.such.
When the current “treatment” is applied to mature individuals, it is a waste of earth’s resources. When applied to children, it is a crime against humanity. The usual argument offered by the perpetrators to worried parents is “Do you want a dead daughter or a living son?” (or son-daughter as the case may be). For consistency, the “doctors” should then prescribe that the equally or more suicidal multiple personality sufferers [1](b) be issued multiple birth certificates, driver’s licenses, and voter registration cards. You’d be amazed how many such cases would show up at elections! The reason this is not done may be that there is no money in it for the doctor.
A true treatment is not even attempted for sex dysphoria, as there is for multiple personality. As one of the victims who went through that hell and returned, physically mutilated, mentally and spiritually scarred, put it: “Nobody told me the truth . . . There was no neuroscience to change my brain, so I had to edit my body.”[25](b)
Corruption of medicine compounded by corruption of politics led to sex preservation and sex recovery treatments being banned in twenty-seven US states, two US territories, and DC.
Yet, the prize example has been provided by the Texas House of Representatives in the 2021 session, when an amendment adding sex/gender dysphoria to the areas of research of the newly created Brain Institute of Texas was defeated. All Democrats and twelve Republicans voted against it. That was an obscurantist position and a morally indefensible one. They all should read the stories of the detransitioned (for example [25])(a)). Anyway, their names are on public records and should be remembered.
It has been known that sex obliteration does not cure the sex dysphoria syndrome; in time (after the excitement of novelty and notice wears out), the person is as miserable and suicidal as before.[28] A comprehensive new study came to the same conclusion[29].
It is high times that sex preservation and restoration, as well as sex obliteration, be properly defined, and described. Medical insurance should cover sex preservation and restoration therapy, and reject sex obliteration. Appropriate legislation must be adopted.
